World Restart a Heart Day on October 16 is a global initiative to increase awareness about the importance of bystander CPR and to increase actual bystander CPR rates worldwide.
Knowing how to respond in an emergency, especially the ability to perform CPR, is a skill set that saves lives each day. Each year, over 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital in the United States.Globally, the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest affects more than 3.8 million people yet just 8% to 12% survive.
The American Heart Association has set a goal of doubling the survival of cardiac arrest by 2030. In order to save more lives from the 350,000 cardiac arrests that occur outside of the hospital every year, we must increase the number of people who respond to cardiac arrest by calling 911, delivering high-quality CPR and getting and using an AED as soon as it is available.
Many organizations, including medical associations, emergency services, schools, and community groups, participate in this event by organizing CPR and AED training sessions, distributing information about cardiac arrest and its treatment, and promoting public engagement in learning these life-saving skills.
Join us on Oct. 16 to raise awareness about CPR to help save more lives.
By teaching people how to perform CPR and use AEDs, World Restart a Heart Day aims to empower individuals to take action in emergency situations and potentially save lives. It’s part of a broader effort to increase community readiness for cardiac emergencies and improve the survival rates of cardiac arrest victims.
