More than 356,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States every year.
Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. More than 356,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States every year, and about 60% to 80% of them die before reaching the hospital.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
The most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest is ventricular fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. In this condition, the lower chambers of the heart quiver instead of pumping blood.
Signs of cardiac arrest include:
- Sudden loss of consciousness
- Lack of pulse
- No breathing
Other symptoms, such as dizziness or chest pain, may also indicate cardiac arrest.
If someone is having a sudden cardiac arrest, you should:
- Call 9-1-1 immediately.
- Lay the person flat on their back on a firm surface.
- Kneel next to the person’s chest.
- Press down hard on the chest, to a third of the depth of the chest.
- Allow the chest to come back up.
- After 30 chest compressions, give two rescue breaths.
Treatment for sudden cardiac arrest includes the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). CPR provides enough oxygen to the brain until a stable electrical rhythm can be established.
Cardiac Arrest at Home
Most cardiac arrests happen at home, but CPR is initiated by a family member or bystander only 40% of the time.
