Are Fewer Women Receiving Livesaving CPR than Men?

CPR on Women

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that's useful in many emergencies in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

A study, led by researchers at University of Pennsylvania and published in the AHA journal “Circulation” in 2018, revealed only 39% of women received CPR from bystanders compared to 45% of men.

We found a brief video from Good Morning America that help explains this serious issue.  View Video

We have summarized some of the important points from the video.

  • Women are much less likely to receive CPR from bystanders
  • Initiate CPR (Hand over hand) immediately (mouth-to-mouth not necessary)
  • Have another bystander call 911
  • 100-120 compressions per minute (like the song “Staying Alive”)
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) after cutting away bra.
  • Courses are available for CPR training

We offer several first aid and CPR courses.

The AHA’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies. Students will also learn to give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED.

The Combination Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Online and In Person Skills Session teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking, or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive. Students learn skills such as treating bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock, and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use.

The CPR & AED program teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult & child AED use, infant CPR and relief of choking in an adult, child, or infant.
