First Aid, CPR/AED Certification Mandated for Teacher Licensure and Renewal
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires all those seeking initial teacher licensure and license renewals and provisional teaching licenses to have documentation of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
As of July 1, 2013, all Virginia teachers must have a current First Aid CPR/AED Certification and other states also have same requirements.
According to the law, the training shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care for CPR and the use of AEDs, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association.
