Wilderness First Aid Courses

Wilderness First Aid

Wilderness First Aid is a 24-hour course for those who do more serious wilderness activities. This training is designed for camp counselors, bicycle patrol members, outdoor enthusiasts, search and rescue teams, law enforcement officers, rangers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, leaders and guides. It is also suitable for those who will be participating in 1-4 day trips where they may have to care for a patient for hours before help can arrive. WFA presents wilderness topics in more detail, provides more time for skills practice, and also includes role-playing wilderness accident scenarios. This course does not include CPR instruction. Certification is good for 3 years.

This class meets the requirements for Wilderness First Aid established by Boy Scouts of America Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The course length may vary depending on whether the class has had previous training, or does enough reading and preparation to reduce the need for extended lectures. Skills training is intensive, with many role-playing wilderness accident scenarios.

Wilderness First Responder

Wilderness First Responder is an 80-hour course that is the standard for outdoor wilderness professionals and others who want a higher level of training or require WFR certification. Many organizations require this as part of their job qualifications. It includes all topics covered in the WFA plus numerous additional topics. The course is recommended for Camp Counselors, Bike Patrollers, Outdoor Enthusiast, Search and Rescue Teams, Law Enforcement, Rangers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts Leaders and Guides and those who are in the backcountry for extended periods and may have to care for a patient for days. The course length may vary depending on whether the class has had previous training or does enough reading and preparation to reduce the need for extended lectures. Skills training is intensive, with many role-playing wilderness accident scenarios. This course does not include CPR instruction. Certification is good for 2 years.

ARC Wilderness and Remote First Aid – 2 Day Course

To provide individuals a foundation of first aid principles and skills to be able to respond to emergencies and give care in areas that do not have immediate emergency medical services (EMS) response. This includes wilderness and remote environments, including urban disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes. Participants must possess current adult CPR/AED certification (or the equivalent) and be at least 14 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course. Prerequisites will be verified by the instructor at the start of the course and are required for student participation in this course.

Designed for scouts and scout leaders, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who works or spends time in remote environments, this course teaches advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away. Based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, this course aligns with OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs.
