First Aid, CPR/AED Certification Mandated for Teacher Licensure/Renewal
Virginia requires all those seeking initial teacher licensure, license renewals and provisional teaching licenses to have documentation of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
As of July 1, 2013 All Virginia teachers must have First Aid CPR/AED Certification.
According to the new law, the training shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care for CPR and the use of AEDs, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
First Aid CPR AED Certification training can be done in two ways. Instructor Lead or Blended Learning Training.

Each direct care staff member shall maintain current certification in first aid from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council, American Safety and Health Institute, community college, hospital, volunteer rescue squad, or fire department. The certification must either be in adult first aid or include adult first aid. To be considered current, the certification shall have been issued within the past three years.
There shall be at least two direct care staff on the premises at all times who have current certification in CPR from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council, American Safety and Health Institute,
community college, hospital, volunteer rescue squad, or fire department. The certification must either be in adult CPR or include adult CPR. To be considered current, the certification must have been issued within the past two years.
