American Heart Association Courses

The American Heart Association offers many programs for CPR, AED, and First Aid. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival. Increasing survival from cardiac arrest is why we offer a variety of programs for companies, schools and communities to offer lifesaving CPR and first aid training.

Basic Life Support - BLSAmerican Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Provider Course

The AHA’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies. Students will also learn to give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED.

Fundamental changes reflecting the new science from the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care have been implemented into this course.

This class is Instructor-led class. There is no online part needed.

What does this course teach?

    • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
    • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
    • Important early use of an AED
    • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
    • Importance of teams in multi rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi rescuer CPR
    • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

This class is for the Healthcare providers such as physicians, Dentist, Doctors, Nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMT’s), respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician’s assistants, residents, medical or nursing students in training, CNA’s, medical aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers-Medic, and other allied health personnel field.

Basic Life Support - BLSAmerican Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Renewal

This course provides a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner, including adult, child, and infant CPR techniques. In the Instructor-Led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students also work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice, skills testing, and a written exam.

The renewal course is designed for medical personnel already certified in BLS and requires re-certification. For this reason, enrollees must provide proof of prior certification before attending the renewal course.  There is no On-Line class for this course.

Intended Audience: This course is for healthcare professionals who have previously completed the BLS course and need to renew. Due to this, you must have a current American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider card or card that must not be expired beyond 14 days to attend this class.

Heart Code BLS Skill Session

The BLS Skills Session is the hands-on session for Heartcode BLS. Heartcode BLS is the AHA’s blended learning delivery method for the AHA’s BLS Course. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on session. The course reflects science and education from the 2020 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC.

Interested persons or groups can complete Heartcode BLS at elearning.heart.org

Note: **This does not include the online course. You need to complete HeartCode BLS. Please select HeartCode BLS under optional items to purchase a course key. Allow 24 hours for the course key to be issued. Please bring a copy of your AHA completion certificate that you did On-Line with you or email a copy to training@medicrepsonse.com.

Students learn skills such as treating bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock, and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use.

Note:

  • First Aid, CPR/AED Certification Mandated for Teacher Licensure and Renewal every Two years
  • Virginia Department of Education – (VDOE) requires all those seeking initial teacher licensure and license renewals and provisional teaching licenses to have documentation of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
  • As of July 1, 2013 All Virginia teachers must have a current First Aid CPR/AED Certification and other states also have same requirements

According to the new law, the training shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care for CPR and the use of AEDs, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association.

Heartsaver Pediactric First Aid, CRP, AEDHeartsaver® Pediatric First Aid CPR AED

Reflecting the latest science and education from the 2020 AHA Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC), the AHA’s Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Course provides students the highest quality training in the lifesaving skills of first aid and/or CPR and use of an AED, with emphasis on emergencies that occur with children and infants. These courses empower students to act with confidence in the event of an emergency at work, home, or in the community.

This program can be taught Online/Blended, Onsite, and Classroom training Instructor Lead. These courses offer flexibility for Training Centers, Instructors, and students to select the appropriate training solution to fit their needs.

Within this course, the different combinations can be taught:

  • Pediatric First Aid
  • Child CPR AED, Infant CPR, Pediatric First Aid
  • Child CPR AED, Infant CPR, Adult CPR AED, Pediatric First Aid

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

  • List the duties, roles, and responsibilities of a first aid rescuer
  • Describe the 4 key steps in pediatric first aid emergency: prevent, protect, assess, and act
  • Remove protective gloves (skill students will demonstrate)
  • Find the problem (skill students will demonstrate) Hands On Skill Practice
  • Describe the assessment and first aid actions for the following life-threatening conditions: difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, and shock
  • Control bleeding and bandaging (skills students will demonstrate)
  • Use an epinephrine pen (skill students will demonstrate) with a EPI Pen trainer
  • Recognize elements of common illnesses and injuries
  • Describe how to find information on preventing illness and injury
  • Describe the risks of smoking and vaping and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle
  • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for all age groups and help from others
  • Give effective breaths by using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on children and adults
  • Describe when and how to help someone who is choking
  • Recognize the legal questions that apply to first aid rescuers

Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED is intended for those in childcare who have a duty to respond to illnesses and injuries in a child or infant in the first few minutes until professional help arrives.  This audience includes childcare workers, teachers, foster care workers, camp counselors, youth organizations, and coaches for children’s sports organizations. This course is also ideal for parents, grandparents, extended family, babysitters, and guardians.

Heartsaver CPR AEDHeartsaver® CPR & AED

Heartsaver® CPR & AED course trains participants to give CPR. In addition, students will learn to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Fundamental changes reflecting the new science from the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care have been implemented into this course.

What Does This Course Teach?

    • Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
    • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
    • Recognize when someone needs CPR
    • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult
    • Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
    • Give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
    • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult
    • Perform high-quality CPR for a child*
    • Demonstrate how to use an AED on a child*
    • Perform high-quality CPR for an infant*
    • Describe when and how to help a choking adult or child

The Heartsaver® First Aid course trains participants first aid basics for the most common first aid emergencies. In addition, students will learn how to recognize emergencies, how to call for help, and how to perform lifesaving skills. Heartsaver Bloodborne PathogensHeartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens

This classroom course teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. This course is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements 29 CFR 1910.1030 for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.

This course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as:

Heartsaver for K -12 First Aid CPR AED from American Heart Association

The American Heart Association Heartsaver for K–12 First Aid CPR AED is a classroom video-based instructor lead course that teaches students critical skills needed to response to manage and first aid choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes of an emergency until medical service help like EMS Fire & Rescue arrives.

The Student will learn skill such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other emergencies. This course also teaches adult (1+) CPR and AED USE.

What Does This Course Teach?

  • First Aid Basics
  • Adult CPR and AED
  • Child CPR and AED
  • Infant CPR and AED
  • Opioid associated life threatening emergency 

The Heartsaver for K-12 Schools eCard may be provided by AHA Training Center Coordinators to K-12 school students, faculty, and staff who successfully complete an AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, Heartsaver CPR AED, or Heartsaver First Aid Course.

“Faculty” refers to teachers and coaches; “staff” refers to an employee of a K-12 school or K-12 school system.

CPR Friends and FamilyFriends & Family CPR & AED

The CPR & AED program teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only CPR, child CPR with breaths, adult & child AED use, infant CPR and relief of choking in an adult, child, or infant. Anyone, an AHA Instructor or a member of the community serving as a facilitator, can lead the course by following the Facilitator Guide and playing the skills practice DVD. The research-proven practice-while-watching technique provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible while they watch skills performed accurately on the DVD. Classroom format works well for learners who prefer group interaction and feedback while learning skills. Each student receives a high-quality Student Manual for ongoing reference.
