Heartsaver CPR/AED

Heartsaver® CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult. This course teaches skills with AHA’s research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students’ learning of skills.

This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.

Course Content

  • The most current science from the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care, including the 2010 AHA and American Red Cross Guidelines for First Aid
  • The Four Steps of First Aid (Prevent, Be Safe, Phone 911, Act)
    • Illnesses and injuries (topics include but are not limited to)
      • Allergic Reactions
      • Asthma
      • Bleeding and Bandaging
      • Diabetes and Low Blood Sugar
      • Drowning
      • Dehydration
      • Head, Neck, and Spine Injuries
      • Seizure
      • Temperature-Related Issues

Course Format

Blended learning (online lessons blended with hands-on skills session)

California State law does not allow online training for licensed child care providers. Please consider the classroom version of this course if you are a child care provider or company operating in the state of California.


  • A transcript option to help meet diverse learning needs
  • Certificate of completion available to print when Part 1 has been completed successfully
  • Can be completed at work, home or wherever Internet access is available
  • Interactive exercises and videos
  • Online access to portions of the Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Student Workbook
  • Online access to several AHA resources to aid in learning, such as skills summary sheets, job aids (action plans, checklists and informational sheets) and videos
  • Printable Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED Quick Reference Guide
  • Students have access to all information in the online course for 24 months following activation of their course key

Course Completion

Successful completion of the Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Online Course includes three (3) parts:

  • Part 1 online: can be completed in approximately 2 ½ hours
  • Parts 2 and 3: hands-on skills practice and testing session with an authorized AHA Instructor; time to complete skills practice and testing sessions vary

Upon successful completion of all three parts, students will receive an AHA Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED course completion card, valid for two years.

Q: Can a student log in and out of the course?

A: Yes. Students can log in and out as many times as they choose. To log out, students must click the “Click here to logout” link located at the top of the page after login. When the student is ready to continue training, he/she can return to OnlineAHA.org and login with his/her registered email and password.
